The Lotus 49 was innovative for a few reasons as Colin Chapman’s design was the first ever to use the engine as a fully stressed member in F1. It was significantly stronger and lighter than traditional designs. The benefits were apparent immediately and Clark won 4 F1 races and the Lotus 49 sat on Pole position in every race it entered in 1967. Jim won the Indy 500 in 1965 coupled with two World Championships in 1963 and 1965. Tragically, this was his last race, he was killed at age 32 in a Formula 2 racing accident in Hockenhiem Germany in 1968. At the time of his death he had won more Grand Prix races (25) .
