This was Sam’s thirteenth attempt to win the Indy 500, and he retired from racing in Victory Lane. Hanks received a record $103,844 for his win of a total record purse of $300,000. This car won again the next year in 1958 with Jimmy Bryan piloting the very same chassis. The lay down Offy cars started in 1957, lowering the center of gravity, and lasted until the mid 60’s rear engine revolution.
