Jim arrived at the 1960 500 as a rookie. Hurtubise made his qualifying attempt on the last crucial day of qualifying at the Brickyard. As dark clouds gathered, his first lap at 148.002 was the fastest lap ever turned at Indy. He followed that with laps of 149.603, 149.402, and 149.601. The average speed for the four-lap run was 149.056, almost 2 1/2 miles an hour faster than Eddie Sachs had run to win the pole position on the first day of qualifying.

The Speedway’s qualifying procedures stated that 1st-, 2nd-, and 3rd-day qualifiers started ahead of the last-day runners. This entitled Jim to a 23rd starting position, but he was the new track record holder. Hurtubise finished 18th after running as high as fifth place, a strong result for a rookie.

At the height of his racing career, Jim was badly burned in a racing accident. While receiving skin grafts, he asked doctors to shape his hands to hold a steering wheel. He drove again, but it was not the same.
