THIS ITEM HAS SOLD 1911 Marmon Wasp first winning race car of the Indy 500, hand built by Classic Construction Models (CCM) in 1996. This beautiful rendition is in 1:12 scale and is over 18 in, long. Constructed of pressed steel, cast brass, and molded rubber it attained the vintage look when completed. Painted a bright yellow with black and red striping of the original race car. The wheels are cast car has a spring suspension and Firestone tires. Originally 500 were scheduled to be built but was reduced to 200. This is serial # 145. In talking to factory reps, I am not sure why the reduction in number but the cars are noted for having weak front axles for their weight. This one has a repaired and reinforced front axle from a shipping claim. This is a rare and very collectible piece of automotive and auto racing history. A nice oak and acrylic display case is include. The original race car was driven by Ray Harroun and won the first Indy 500 in 6 hours 42 minutes and eight seconds. The average speed for the 500 miles was 74.602. This unique vehicle was made by the Marmon Motor Car Co. and was powered by a six cylinder engine. This was 3 of their 2 cylinder engines designed together for the race. Firsts on the car included a rear view mirror so he could check traffic and rear tire wear. As always free shipping.
